Self Portrait

16 X 20
Oil on panel backed canvas

I just finished this today, 4 days too late to make the deadline for a self portrait exhibit at Artlink, our local art center.  Ah well.  The devil was in the detail, but so was the fun.

  1. I love this Terri. The intricate detail on the clothing looks impossible...so beautifully done. I also love the perspective on the forward hand holding the book. Just a fabulous job. I love it!

  2. Maria, thank you so much. That perspective and lighting on the hand was daunting at first. When I was working out the drawing initially and that hand seemed so big I thought "really?" - but just painting what I saw and with a leap of faith in the magic of foreshortening, it worked.

  3. This is wonderful! I can't believe how much detail you were able to get into the fabrics. Just beautiful. Love the perspective too. What a challenge this must of been!

  4. Use of fabrics make me think of Matisse. Great job on lighting of hand and thumb. That's a difficult perspective and you nailed it. Sorry you missed the show. This is a winner!

  5. Cathy and Jennifer - Thanks ladies! There were challenges for sure, but breaking it into sections, for instance the left side, the middle, and right side of the blouse bodice, each sleeve, the fringe on the pillow, etc, kept it from overwhelming me. I really enjoyed doing it once I stopped trying to make the deadline.

  7. Terri, this is simply amazing! Fabric, Hand, Perspective - definitely have to agree with the other ladies.
But what gets me most is how you conveyed a feeling, a calmness in your portrait! A wonderful piece of art!

  10. Terri, this is AMAZING! The face, the hands, and the skin tones are magnificent; but the details in the fabric are so impressive. I am struck by the lighting on the left hand. It almost appears as the hand will come right through, towards the viewer. You will find another competition!
